Masters of Camouflage

Sitted amongst the dry vegetation on the ground it’s almost unoticable. As you approach it, it Squint’s its eyes the main thing that gives away it’s presence.

Welcome to the world of Dusky Nightjars in Kilome. When disturbed it let’s out a soft whistle sound. Sitting still all day in vegetation that resembles its body pattern it takes to flight at dusk to feed on insects

Drought?

Kenya is in a drought situation few have experienced before, with many looking at receiving food Aid. However one young farmer in drought prone Makueni County is having a different conversation – he is busy working out how to expand his farming

NO RIVER, NO WELL!!

The region (kilome) had just come from 6 straight months without a drop of rain, rains came but in a months time No More Rains. People pass by their shambas NOT wanting to look at the dry crops however this young gentleman is busy on his farm

…he say’s

“my grandfather told me of a question his friend asked him:

‘How can water fall over your head, shoulders and onto your feet..then you start chasing after it kilometers away to pick it up after it has washed the ground to use it’?”

He also asks Youth: Do any of you ever do the maths of the work you do?

To those who say it’s expensive; he  started off with the sell of a calf to set up his system of farming (No Bank Loan, No Aid Agencies..).

HIS ADVICE; It’s NOT a competition of who can do it, I’m CONSTANTLY Open to Learning to improve myself – i Do NOT know it ALL!!

*To those willing to learn how he manages to irrigate in such a Hot Dry Area without Rivers – i’m willing to train ANY Youth or Community willing to learn what i’ve learnt farming in Makueni with meagre resources..

6 Years in the waiting to get image of this one! Just when i’ve given up looking out for it and put away my camera it lands a mere one metre infront of me completly ignoring my presence flapping it’s fabulously long white tail (some 30cm or so) and takes it’s time preening itself turning its body back and forth!

Off for my camera and its gone..

Love the way it’s tail follows it, flowing in a wave like manner.

i’m kind of used to a croaking sound from these creaters, and so when it starts raining and the croaking ends. Instead you start getting a high pitched chirping sound, more like birds but in the dead of the night that got me curious.

But any time i got to stop near the water bodies the continous chirping ceased. So i decided to start playing the patience game and boy was i rewarded!

frog with blown up throat ©muokikioko2016

sitting there Looking like a jazz musician about to blow his trumpet – they fill up their throats with air to a point you can clearly trace the vein network on the sac. Hold the ground firmly, test flexibility of air sac to retract and blow up again. Finally they hold their bodies steady and let the air sac’s chirp, first in low tones then it goes picking up in sound…

Wow…i did manage to capture the process in full HD..

moon-year-day

supermoon in kilome, today it was at its largest (14 Nov 2016)

“The most spectacular supermoon since 1948 will light up the sky, appearing 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.

The event on Monday November 14 – described as “undeniably beautiful” by American space agency Nasa – is the result of the moon coming closer to Earth than it has done for 69 years.

Nothing will match it until the moon makes a similar approach on November 25 2034.” – Daily Telegraph
